Secure Space Network of Mobile SCIFs Speeds Defense Work

The Secure Space Network approach to using mobile manufacturing sites for classified goods has been successfully employed by NASA.

The Secure Space Network has been expanded by the U.S. Department of War (DoW) to increase industrial access to classified work within the DoW. The network incorporates about 50 mobile Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities (SCIFs) and related information systems across the U.S.

The facilities, which may be located at military installations or industry-focused sites, enable industrial suppliers to engage in classified development, collaboration, and production by broadening regional access for those suppliers. The Secure Space Network is led by the Office of the Under Secretary of War for Acquisition and Sustainment's Office of Industrial Base Growth. 

James R. Mismash, Deputy Assistant Secretary of War for Industrial Base Growth and Director of the Office of Small Business Programs, explained, “We must make it easier for capable companies to contribute at every level of the mission. Industry has identified access to classified environments as a major barrier, and the Secure Space Network directly addresses that challenge by opening the door to classified work for more companies.”

Mismash added the importance of congressional support, “With strong partnership across the agency and support from Congress, this effort will strengthen our supplier base and help deliver the capabilities our warfighters need faster and at greater scale.”

The network increases the secure infrastructure that's essential for more companies to work within the accredited secure environments required for classified projects. 

As executed by various branches of the government, such as NASA, the Secure Space Network provides access for increased industrial participation in classified programs (see image above). Enhanced access also helps speed project development time while boosting cost-effectiveness and helping build an increased competitive environment for classified goods.

Production efforts for each mobile unit will establish manufacturing repeatability, followed by scalable production capability to keep pace with increasing requirements.
