Ultra-Low-Loss 12G-SDI Coaxial Video Cable Fits Defense Applications

Sept. 9, 2021
Gore's high-tech coaxial cable for UHD video meets the needs of defense-system designers looking to handle video signals coming from onboard military vehicles.

Modern military vehicles include multiple sensors that generate critical video during missions. With that in mind, W. L. Gore & Associates (Gore) has expanded its coaxial-cable line for defense land system applications with a cable that’s smaller and lighter than previous offerings, yet capable of transmitting ultra-high-definition (UHD) 4K video with excellent shielding from RF interference.

The cable meets various internationally recognized civil and military specifications, including the latest Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) 12G-SDI standard. Published in March 2015, 12G-SDI defines a 12-Gb/s transmission of uncompressed, latency-free UHD 4K video at 60 fps on a single wire. According to Gore, the cable can deliver this performance at operating temperatures ranging from -55 to 200°C.

Designed for use with remote-controlled turret cameras, local situation awareness, and other video-generating sensor systems, Gore’s coaxial cables are engineered with a specialized fluoropolymer insulation. This provides superior resistance to weather, abrasion, and other hazards associated with extreme weather, rough usage, and confined routing space.

David Maliniak | Executive Editor, Microwaves & RF

I am Executive Editor of Microwaves & RF, an all-digital publication that broadly covers all aspects of wireless communications. More particularly, we're keeping a close eye on technologies in the consumer-oriented 5G, 6G, IoT, M2M, and V2X markets, in which much of the wireless market's growth will occur in this decade and beyond. I work with a great team of editors to provide engineers, developers, and technical managers with interesting and useful articles and videos on a regular basis.
