Comm Solution Tackles Water and Environmental Sector 2G Migration

Numerous applications in the water industry, as well as in M2M and IoT environments, still rely on GSM technology, and therefore face an urgent need for modernization.

With an eye toward the upcoming shutdown of the GSM-based 2G mobile network in Germany, Panasonic Industry and INSYS icom are supporting the water and environmental sectors with updated communications options. The two companies presented a joint solution that efficiently modernizes existing installations while reducing investment costs, leveraging Panasonic Industry’s FP-I4C communication controller along with industrial routers and gateways from INSYS icom.

The FP-I4C makes it possible to integrate existing serially connected controllers into modern networks without requiring a complete system replacement, helping companies reduce costs while supporting sustainability by extending the life of existing hardware.

Accepting a wide range of industrial communication protocols, the controller connects existing installations to databases and cloud systems. Thus, the FP-14C enables remote access and maintenance, provides web-based visualizations for improved usability, and integrates into point-to-point and multi-point communication structures.

Combined with INSYS icom’s industrial routers, this creates a scalable and secure end-to-end solution. By migrating to modern mobile communications technologies, companies gain higher bandwidth and lower latency as well as enhanced security mechanisms such as hardened operating systems, encryption technologies, and flexible VPN architectures.
