Wi-Fi 7 SoCs are Made to Order for IoT Applications

May 1, 2025
The low-power wireless SoCs, which integrate Wi-Fi 7 with Bluetooth 6.0 and Zigbee/Thread, are compliant with the Matter protocol and can send/receive data on multiple frequency bands.

The Overview: Wi-Fi 7 SoCs Tailored for IoT Applications

A family of Wi-Fi 7 SoCs combines low-power operation, ultra-low latency, and high peak data rates to fuel IoT applications across a broad spectrum of consumer, commercial, and automotive applications.

Who Needs It & Why: Designing a Versatile Wireless Networking Infrastructure

With their optimization for low power consumption and scalability, Synaptics’ Veros SYN4398, SYN4390, and SYN4384 wireless SoCs are designed for IoT applications that require reliable performance over range. They’re expected to provide enhanced user experiences in a wide range of applications, including 8K video streaming, interactive gaming, security monitoring, immersive AR/VR, and home and automotive entertainment.

According to ABI Research, annual shipments of Wi-Fi 7 chipsets should surpass 2 billion by 2029 and hit a CAGR of 56% between 2024 and 2029.

Under the Hood

These triple-combo SoCs integrate Wi-Fi 7 with Bluetooth 6.0 and Zigbee/Thread; the latter makes them compliant with the Matter protocol standard. They also feature an 802.15.4 radio for Zigbee and Thread networking. Thus, they can serve as versatile smart-home hubs in heterogeneous networking environments. The SoCs support bandwidths of up to 320 MHz and peak data rates up to 5.8 Gb/s with ultra-low latency.

A key feature is Wi-Fi 7 multi-link operation (MLO), which enables the devices to send and receive a data stream using multiple frequency bands (2.4, 5, or 6 GHz). Their 2×2 + 2×2 MLO capability aids in the devices’ low latency, reliable connections, and high throughput in real-time applications.

Other features of the Veros Wi-Fi 7 SoCs include an integrated RF front end and power-management IC as well as dual-core Bluetooth 6.0 compliance to support LE Audio, Channel Sounding, and LE Long Range functionality. Integrated Arm cores and memory allow for offloading of networking functions from the host processor to reduce system power.

Availability

The SYN4390 and SYN4384 are available now for evaluation; the SYN4398 is for limited engagement only.

I am Executive Editor of Microwaves & RF, an all-digital publication that broadly covers all aspects of wireless communications. More particularly, we're keeping a close eye on technologies in the consumer-oriented 5G, 6G, IoT, M2M, and V2X markets, in which much of the wireless market's growth will occur in this decade and beyond. I work with a great team of editors to provide engineers, developers, and technical managers with interesting and useful articles and videos on a regular basis.
