The Overview: A Tough and Capable RF Switch
Teledyne HiRel Semiconductors’ radiation-tolerant, wideband 50-GHz RF switch, model TDSW050A2T, operates from true DC to 50 GHz. It provides high RF performance down to 0 Hz. As such, it’s well-suited for a bevy of complex space and defense applications.
Who Needs It & Why: Developers of Space-Borne Systems
Thanks in large part to its ruggedness, and especially its TID radiation tolerance to 100 krad (Si), the TDSW050A2T RF switch is a good candidate for use in satellite systems. It’s also qualified to an extended temperature range of –40 to 85°C per MIL-PRF-38534 Class K equivalency.
Under the Hood: Outstanding Electrical Performance
Once delivered to orbit or other space-borne use cases, the TDSW050A2T exploits monolithic microwave IC (MMIC) design techniques to perform strongly across frequencies up to the mmWave bands. Among its attributes are low insertion loss, high isolation, fast switching times, and high linearity from DC to 50 GHz.
The switch attains an input power 1-dB compression of 23 dBm (typical) and supports 23 dB of port isolation at 50 GHz. It operates with ±5-V power supplies with minimal DC power consumption and is controlled with TTL-compatible voltage levels.
The device, developed in a 150-nm, pHEMT InGaAs process, is housed in a 1.15- × 1.47- × 0.1-mm die meant for hybrid assembly products.
