Lighting System Provides Low Observable Visibility

A modular lighting system provides different forms of light with minimum detectability by enemy forces, for use by different types of military vehicles.

The Expeditionary Lighting Kit (ELK) covert lighting system has recently completed U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) environmental testing for use in airborne, land, and maritime missions. Developed by partners Coherent Technical Services, Inc. (CTSi) and Blue Wolf, the ELK covert tactical lighting system is compatible with NVIS systems that can be installed on any system or application on an as-needed basis.

“There are far too many critical mission operations that cannot be performed in contested battlefield environments due to the limitations of visibility currently available in the cargo compartment and ramp area of military aircraft,” said Tom Sanders, CTSi managing director. “The lighting solution we’ve created through a strategic partnership with Blue Wolf provides warfighters with independently controlled tri-mode lighting for sensitive missions.”

The ELK solution is not designed for specific airframes or system designs but has been developed as a form of universal lighting solution. It is meant to be added to any airframe without modifications to the airframe. The EIK employs a modular design that can be scaled as needed for light according to the requirements of the airframe and the application. It is also well-suited for use on ground vehicles and for maritime applications. The ELK provides as many as four zones of independently selectable and controlled infrared (IR), white, or NVG-compatible light to minimize detection by enemy forces.
