Satellite assembly integration time (AIT), which is typically completed in white rooms, is the most costly phase of the assembly process. Now, a new family of connectors is vowing to shorten assembly time through its fast-locking technology. The connectors promise to save up to $100,000 per satellite-communications (satcom) system during the AIT phase. Their fast-locking contact system replaces traditional screw lock technology, thereby eliminating the need for screws, washers, and clips. They are replaced with a snap-in system. The space-grade connectors designed with the fast-locking contact system include the D*MA and D*M series D-subminiature connectors. The connectors meet stringent outgassing and residual magnetism requirements and conform to a number of ESA and MIL qualifications and quality levels. The D*M and D*MA series D-subminiature connectors are employed in a number of space-equipment applications as a connection between PCBs and various modules within the satellite system.
