Reliable Wi-Fi 4 Chip Carries Next-Generation WPA3 Security

Nov. 17, 2020
With enough connectivity horsepower for IoT-connected devices like smart lighting, the CYW43439 brings WPA3 security to home automation.

IoT security is a hot topic, and in its CYW43439 Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/BLE combination IC, Infineon Technologies now offers what it says is one of the industry’s only dedicated Wi-Fi 4 solutions to deliver the latest WPA3 security standard. In IoT applications such as smart thermostats and smart lighting, the CYW43439 is expected to make it easier for designers to comply with new security regulations currently emerging worldwide, including the California Consumer Privacy Act. This, for example, gives more privacy rights to consumers, including the right to know about the personal information a business collects, and the right for that information to be deleted.

The bulk of IoT products function effectively with the basic connectivity implemented by Wi-Fi 4; thus, the standard will remain the workhorse of IoT designs for years to come. IoT-connected devices like thermostats and lighting require only low bandwidth and low duty cycles. This means there will be an ongoing need for these devices to support the latest security features, such as WPA3. It allows more robust authentication, increased cryptographic strength, and more resilient mission-critical networks.

With Wi-Fi 4, the CYW43439 offers cross-platform features for RTOS, Linux, and Android, and development support for software that includes advanced smart-coexistence for multi-user Wi-Fi and Bluetooth applications, enabling multiple connections simultaneously including BLE Mesh networking. The devices reduce system power consumption by providing Host SoC off-load processing for network management and audio applications reducing CPU loading. Its optimized software for library-based functions allows connections to mobile devices or any cloud service at any time.

Infineon’s CYW43439 with ModusToolbox software gives designers access to one of the most adaptable development systems for IoT, including carefully packaged solutions supporting popular ecosystems and cloud management tools.

The Infineon CYW43439 is available in volume quantities. Commercial modules are also available from module partners.

David Maliniak | Executive Editor, Microwaves & RF

I am Executive Editor of Microwaves & RF, an all-digital publication that broadly covers all aspects of wireless communications. More particularly, we're keeping a close eye on technologies in the consumer-oriented 5G, 6G, IoT, M2M, and V2X markets, in which much of the wireless market's growth will occur in this decade and beyond. I work with a great team of editors to provide engineers, developers, and technical managers with interesting and useful articles and videos on a regular basis. Check out our free newsletters to see the latest content.

You can send press releases for new products for possible coverage on the website. I am also interested in receiving contributed articles for publishing on our website. Use our contributor's packet, in which you'll find an article template and lots more useful information on how to properly prepare content for us, and send to me along with a signed release form.

About me:

In his long career in the B2B electronics-industry media, David Maliniak has held editorial roles as both generalist and specialist. As Components Editor and, later, as Editor in Chief of EE Product News, David gained breadth of experience in covering the industry at large. In serving as EDA/Test and Measurement Technology Editor at Electronic Design, he developed deep insight into those complex areas of technology. Most recently, David worked in technical marketing communications at Teledyne LeCroy, leaving to rejoin the EOEM B2B publishing world in January 2020. David earned a B.A. in journalism at New York University.
