CAES Continues Support of SPY-6 Radar Systems

Sept. 21, 2023
The SPY-6 radar system integrates S- and X-band radar systems to protect six classes of naval vessels.

As part of the SPY-6 radar program, CAES has won a $200 million follow-on, hardware production and sustainment award from Raytheon Technologies to supply fully tested modular assemblies for the AN/SPY-6(V)1 radar system. Also known as the SPY-6 or Air and Missile Defense Radar (AMDR), the U.S. Navy’s electronically scanned 3D radar system integrates two radars and a controller. The system (see image above) employs an S-band radar for tracking ballistic missile systems and an X-band radar for horizon searches. CAES supplies front-end radar modules in support of both frequency bands.

CAES has been a supplier to Raytheon on the SPY-6 program for several years and this multiple-year, follow-on award is evidence of Raytheon’s satisfaction with the program. Mike Kahn, president, and chief executive officer (CEO) of CAES, said, “SPY-6 is one of the most advanced naval radars in production, and CAES is proud to contribute to the performance and reliability of this system.”

He added, “We look forward to our continued work with Raytheon to provide our military with this critical capability.” The SPY-6 system is designed for six classes of naval vessels and can defend against ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, hostile aircraft, and surface ships simultaneously with increased range and sensitivity compared to older radar systems.
