Curtiss-Wright Contracted for Naval Defense Systems

Sept. 6, 2017
Curtiss-Wright’s valve group has received an order from the U.S. Navy for different types of power system valves for submarines and aircraft systems.

Curtiss-Wright Corp. has been awarded a contract in excess of $49 million to provide valves for the U.S. Navy’s Virginia class submarines and Ford-class aircraft. The award, which was received by Curtiss-Wright’s Bechtel Plant Machinery, Inc., includes fiscal year 2017 orders for submarine propulsion plant valves for two ships and a Fiscal Year 2017 order for aircraft carrier propulsion plant valves.

“We are pleased to have been awarded this important naval defense contract, which reflects Curtiss-Wright’s long-standing relationships and continued support of these critical U.S. naval defense platforms,” said David C. Adams, chairman and CEO of Curtiss-Wright Corp. “Since the inception of nuclear powered ships, Curtiss-Wright’s commitment to providing the most advanced and reliable technologies has ensured our continued participation in these significant defense programs, which continue to receive strong Congressional support.

“Further,” added Adams, “our innovative products and reliable solutions support the U.S. Navy’s cost and delivery targets, while reinforcing the fleet readiness commitments for both platforms.”

The company’s high-performance valves have been a part of naval submarine systems for some time (see photo), with an established track record of high reliability under challenging operating conditions. Work on these orders will be performed at a facility in East Farmingdale, N.Y., part of Curtiss-Wright’s industrial division within the company’s Commercial/Industrial business segment. Engineering and manufacturing processes for the contract have already begun and are expected to continue through 2021.
