Comtech Amplifiers Boost X-Band Satcom Systems

April 1, 2021
The SSPAs and BUCs are intended for use in transportable military SATCOM ground stations; equipment is optimized for low leakage.

As part of a follow-on order, Comtech Telecommunications Corp.’s subsidiary, Comtech Xicom Technology, Inc., has landed a contract worth more than $1 million for X-band solid-state power amplifiers (SSPAs) and block upconverters (BUCs) for use in transportable military satellite communications (satcom) ground stations. Because of the adjacent location of transmit and receive bands in X-band satcom systems, signal leakage must be minimized and these SSPAs and BUCs (see the figure) have been optimized to supply generous output power levels with low leakage, for use in fixed, transportable, manpack, and mobile military applications.

Fred Kornberg, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Comtech Telecommunications Corp., said: “Comtech has invested heavily to build out a comprehensive X-band product line to support military fixed and transportable terminals with the most challenging performance and environmental requirements.” He added: “Our end customer remains pleased with the outstanding technical performance and reliability of these Comtech BUCs, and we are proud of our track record on this critical military program.”
