MIMO and Ubiquitous Connectivity

July 26, 2022
Houman Zarrinkoub, principal wireless product manager at MathWorks, discusses some of the challenges facing RF designers as they work to add new dimensions to "ubiquitous connectivity" for our smartphones, vehicles, and IoT-enabled devices.

These days, our wireless-enabled systems can seamlessly switch between satellite, cellular, and local-area networks to maintain a fast, secure, and reliable online connection. We might call that “ubiquitous connectivity,” and our smartphones, vehicles, and IoT-enabled devices are just the tip of the iceberg. Yet, challenges loom for RF design engineers as they work to add new dimensions to ubiquitous connectivity.

In this video, we'll discuss those challenges, as well as some resources that can help overcome them, with Houman Zarrinkoub, MathWorks’ principal wireless product manager.

Among the topics we'll discuss:

  • What trends are driving ubiquitous connectivity?
  • How are engineers incorporating MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output)-powered beamforming into their systems to achieve ubiquitous connectivity?
  • Why should engineers consider positioning and localization of the end users in a network very important when working with Bluetooth, 5G, Wi-Fi, and satellite communications systems?
  • How are Wi-Fi, cellular, and satellite communications evolving?
  • Why is it important for engineers to test the compatibility of wireless signals across broad-area networks (satellite links), cellular wide-area networks (4G, 5G, and beyond), local-area networks (Wi-Fi), and personal-area networks (such as Bluetooth and ZigBee)?
  • What is MathWorks doing to help engineering teams enable ubiquitous connectivity?

David Maliniak | Executive Editor, Microwaves & RF

I am Executive Editor of Microwaves & RF, an all-digital publication that broadly covers all aspects of wireless communications. More particularly, we're keeping a close eye on technologies in the consumer-oriented 5G, 6G, IoT, M2M, and V2X markets, in which much of the wireless market's growth will occur in this decade and beyond. I work with a great team of editors to provide engineers, developers, and technical managers with interesting and useful articles and videos on a regular basis.
