As with many instruments, the noise levels of DSOs will be limited by the measurement bandwidth, with wider bandwidths letting in more noise. Unfortunately, wide bandwidths are also needed to accurately characterize the short pulses found in many digital circuits and radar systems, so controlling noise and jitter in an oscilloscope is essential to making these measurements. Editor Nancy Friedrich offers a review of an application note that can help, "Removing Jitter From Picosecond Pulse Measurements," from famed pulse-generator supplier Picosecond Pulse Labs.
