GaN Amplifiers Power In-Flight Connectivity Applications

Jan. 5, 2022
Power amplifiers based on tube and solid-state devices have been developed for various satcom uplink applications through mmWave frequencies.

Comtech Telecommunications Corp. has received a follow-on order worth $1.2 million from a major customer during the first quarter of fiscal 2022. The order is for its Falcon Ka-band GaN-based solid-state power amplifiers (SSPAs). The amplifiers, which have been designed for in-flight connectivity (IFC) applications, incorporate triband block frequency upconverters (BUCs) and are packaged in ARINC 791-compliant housings. The Falcon product line includes amplifiers for Ku- and Ka-band frequency bands with low phase noise and linear gain. The firm works closely with its Comtech Xicom Technology group to produce solid-state (see the figure) and tube-based power amplifiers for military and commercial satellite communications (satcom) uplink applications covering frequencies from 2 to 52 GHz and output power levels from 8 W to 3 kW.

“Comtech offers a portfolio of GaN-based products that utilize the latest GaN technology to deliver RF amplification enabling high-speed satellite communications from ground based and airborne terminals,” said Fred Kornberg, Chairman of the Board, and chief executive officer (CEO) of Comtech Telecommunications Corp. “We continue to expand in the SSPA market offering both Ku-Band and Ka-Band products for IFC applications.”
