General Dynamics European Land Systems has been awarded a contract to deliver a fifth batch of Piranha III vehicles to the Romanian Armed Forces. The addition of these eight-wheeled armored vehicles (see photo) is part of the Romanian Army’s plan to modernize its wheeled armored vehicle fleet. The Piranha vehicles have been a successful part of the Romanian Armed Forces since 2006. More than 11,000 are fielded globally.

The latest generation of Piranha armored vehicles features a lightweight hull design that doesn’t compromise ruggedness. The vehicles, which are available in 6 × 6, 8 × 8, and 10 ×10 wheeled configurations, were originally developed by Mowag Motorwagenfabriken of Switzerland, which is now part of General Dynamics European Land Combat Systems (ELCS).
