A MMIC-based transceiver chipset from Hittite Microwave Corp. is geared toward 60-GHz applications, including cellular-backhaul, high-speed data links, wireless sensors, and wireless docking stations. The models HMC6000 transmitter and HMC6001 receiver ICs are fabricated with silicon-germanium (SiGe) BiCMOS semiconductor process technology. The transmitter IC, which requires only an external crystal reference oscillator, translates analog baseband in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) signals to a selected channel in the 60-GHz band. It includes a low-noise frequency synthesizer for tuning across the 57-to-64-GHz range in 500- or 540-MHz steps, depending upon the reference frequency. It provides as much as 38-dB gain (with 17-dB gain-control range) to achieve as much as +12-dBm linear output power and as much as +17-dBm saturated output power. The receiver IC downconverts signals in the 60-GHz band to differential I and Q baseband signals, supporting signal bandwidths as wide as 1.8 GHz. The receiver contains programmable baseband filters to set the highpass corner frequency for removal of residual DC offset and local oscillator (LO) feedthrough signals and to set the lowpass frequency for lower bandwidth signals. It has a 6-dB noise figure at maximum gain, with a 65-dB gain-control range that is adjustable in 1-dB steps. Both the HMC6000 and HMC6001 exhibit phase noise of typically -86 dBc/Hz offset 1 MHz from the carrier.
