A new low-noise amplifier (LNA) has been designed to enable mobile phones, smart phones, and other handheld devices to receive broadcast TV. The uPD5740T6N LNA is a wideband IC with a bypass/through function. It is part of Newport Media's mobile TV reference designs and also is applicable for short-range wireless systems in the 450-, 868-, and 900-MHz frequency ranges including applications like smart meter, smart grid, and wireless security. The LNA operates from 0.05 to 1.00 GHz with a supply voltage of +2.8 VDC and control voltage of 1 V. In LNA mode at 770 MHz, the device draws 5 mA collector current and delivers a 1.5-dB noise figure, 13.5 dB gain, and an input third-order intercept point of +2 dBm. In bypass mode at 770 MHz, it draws 1 A collector current while exhibiting 1.3 dB insertion loss with an input third-order intercept point of +30 dBm. The component switches from amplification mode when receive signals are weak to bypass mode when receive signals are strong. In doing so, it extends battery life while delivering high-quality video to the end user. This integrated circuit (IC) is manufactured using the firm's latest silicon-germanium (SiGe) BiCMOS process. The uPD5740T6N comes in a six-pin TSON measuring 1.5 x 1.5 x 0.37 mm. P&A: $0.48 each in quantities of 100,000; available now.
