Dr. Irwin Jacobs, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of QUALCOMM, Inc. (San Diego, CA), has been named this year's industry leader by the IEEE Communications Society. Dr. Jacobs, who founded the company in 1985 (and was the first Keynote Speaker at the Wireless Symposium & Exhibition) has been at the helm of the company best known as a pioneer and world leader in code-division-multiple-access (CDMA) cellular-communications technology, in which frequencies can be shared by numerous signals differentiated by discrete codes.

The IEEE Communications Society recognizes an information or communication industry executive who has played a major leadership role in research or development and introduction of systems, devices, applications or services that have significantly impacted the communications and information markets on a global basis, and substantially advanced the use of information and communication technologies in industry, commerce and society. Dr. Jacobs joins a list of previously honored executives that includes Dr. Keiji Tachikawa, president of NTT DoCoMo, Inc.; John Chambers, president and CEO of Cisco Systems; and Jorma Ollila, chairman and CEO of Nokia Corp. According to Curtis A. Siller, Jr., president of the IEEE Communications Society, "Dr. Jacobs exemplifies the mission of the IEEE Communications Society, which is to promote the advancement of science, technology and applications in communications and related disciplines." Siller added that "his executive leadership of QUALCOMM has resulted in advances and new directions in the information and communications industry. The IEEE Communications Society is pleased to recognize his contribution with our Industry Leader Award."

Dr. Jacobs received the honor for his contribution to and leadership in the development and growth of the wireless communications industry. He has guided a technology- CDMA-with many early skeptics, and nurtured it into the world's fastest-growing, most advanced voice and data wireless technology. Dr. Jacobs acknowledged the award: "I'm honored to be recognized by the IEEE Communications Society and to be in such excellent company with past award winners." He also indicated that it is an award that should be shared by the company: "QUALCOMM is pleased to be recognized for its innovations in CDMA technologies and contributing to the wireless industry as a whole." Prior to starting QUALCOMM, Dr. Jacobs was a co-founder of the visionary San-Diego-based LINKABIT, an innovator in many telecommunications technologies. Prior to his business career, he was on the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of California, San Diego.
