New Radio (NR) is the 3GPP effort for defining and standardizing a new Radio Access Technology (RAT) for 5G. NR will cover a wide set of use cases (eMBB, URLLC, and mMTC) and introduce new cutting-edge technologies such as millimeter-wave and beamforming. The first NR release in Dec’17 will focus on non-stand-alone connectivity where a NR gNB will always rely on a master LTE eNB. With the December deadline approaching, let’s take a look at the NR physical layer.
