The WiMedia ISO standard for high-speed ultra-wideband (UWB) wireless connectivity may offer efficient power consumption and high data rates, but its test requirements are some of the most complex among current wideband RF standards.

To that end, Tektronix has created a Methods of Implementation (MOI) for the new UWB WiMedia PHY Test Specification 1.2. The MOI provides step-by-step instructions to perform 1.2 specification compliance testing including, for example, the increase in specified receiver testing. In addition, the company has released a new version of its UWB analysis software for DSA/DPO70000 series oscilloscopes that provides additional measurements for UWB WiMedia 1.2.

For UWB WiMedia radio designs using MB-OFDM technology, Tektronix' UWB Analysis software reads the digital information from the RF waveform to determine the demodulation method on a packet-by-packet basis. UWB Analysis determines and displays the demodulation method, data rates, time frequency coding, the pass/fail test limits, and constellation type. Detection and analysis is done on each packet from the RF content.

As previously stated, the MOI covers the new version 1.2 requirements for receiver testing.RFXpress software running on the AWG7102 enables creation of compliant and non-compliant WiMedia waveforms for all bandgroups and data rates. It also addresses the differences of hopping Time Frequency Interleaving (TFI) and TFI over two bands (TFI2) time-frequency codes, and non-hopping Fixed Frequency Interleaving (FFI) time-frequency codes.

With 20-Gsamples/s sampling technology, engineers can generate signals in bandgroups 1 and 2 directly from the AWG7102 without the need for an external I/Q modulator. For the higher frequency bandgroups, the AWG7102 enables waveform creation through either I/Q modulation or less expensive mixing tools. The AWG7102 arbitrary waveform generator provides comprehensive WiMedia signal generation support for MAC and PHY layers.

In addition, RFXpress has the ability to add impairments like time-synchronized Gaussian noise at the WiMedia packet level, create tone nulling, and introduce realistic interference to WiMedia waveforms from sources including WiFi (802.11a and MIMO), WiMAX, and radar.
