Making Connections at mmWave Frequencies

High-performance coaxial cables from Junkosha were on display and demonstrated for use through 110 GHz and higher at the 2018 IEEE IMS.

Energy levels were high among exhibitors and visitors for the 2018 IEEE IMS, with thousands of visitors seeking products and solutions at millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequencies (roughly 28 to 300 GHz). One of the essential product solutions—coaxial cables—is needed for transferring signals among hardware in many applications, including automotive radar, emerging 5G base stations, and test equipment.

One of the exhibitors answering that call is Junkosha, which came to the exhibition displaying its MWX001 and MWX051 cables. These rugged cables, such as the MWX001 (Fig. 1), feature impressive performance, with insertion loss of around 2 dB at 110 GHz (Fig. 2). MWX001 cables also curb propagation delays in mmWave cables, with typical propagation delay of only 4.2 ns/m. The high-performance mmWave cable has an outer diameter of 4 mm.

Junkosha also gave a live demonstration of its MWX051 cable, showing how the cable maintains phase stability at 50 GHz when being repeatedly flexed. These cables are well-suited for vector-network-analyzer (VNA) measurements at higher frequencies. The MWX051 features a high tensile strength, a low dielectric constant, and high flex life thanks to Junkosha’s “precision engineered expanded-PTFE wrapping technology.” The new cables illustrate how the company is focused on supporting tomorrow’s 5G requirements and more.
