Synthesizers Squash Noise To 33 GHz

May 13, 2014
These YIG-based signal sources support applications from 18 to 33 GHz in compact housings suitable for use in modular instrument enclosures.

Compact MLSP Series frequency synthesizers produce low-noise output signals to 33 GHz.

As communications networks reach into the millimeter-wave bands, stable, low-noise signal sources become more valuable in support of receivers, transmitters, and even test equipment. Recognizing this need, Micro Lambda Wireless has developed its MLSP Series frequency synthesizers for signals from 18 to 33 GHz. Based on yttrium-iron-garnet (YIG) oscillators, these phase-locked sources are available in wide tuning ranges with low noise levels and relatively fast tuning speeds, such as Model MLSP-1829 for use from 18 to 29 GHz and Model MLSP-2333 for applications from 23 to 33 GHz.

The MLSP Series frequency synthesizers (see photo) are available with a 100‑MHz internal crystal oscillator with ±1-ppm stability, for use with external reference oscillators from 10 to 200 MHz, or for use with both internal and external reference oscillators. These compact frequency synthesizers both measure 5 × 3 × 1 in. and fit into a two-slot PXI chassis.

The frequency synthesizers offer 1-msec switching speed for a 100-MHz frequency step and 3-msec switching speed for a 1-GHz step. They limit harmonic levels to typically −15 dBc, with subharmonic levels of typically –20 dBc and spurious levels of typically –54 dBc. Based on an internal crystal-reference oscillator, the single-sideband (SSB) phase noise is well controlled. Measured from an 18‑GHz carrier, the SSB phase noise is –74 dBc/Hz offset 100 Hz from the carrier, –91 dBc/Hz offset 10 kHz from the carrier, and –138 dBc/Hz offset 1 MHz from the carrier. From a 33‑GHz carrier, the SSB phase noise is –65 dBc/Hz offset 100 Hz from the carrier, –84 dBc/Hz offset 10 kHz from the carrier, and –134 dBc/Hz offset 1 MHz from the carrier.
