For sustainment and support of the Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle (AMPV) for the next five years, the U.S. Army has awarded BAE Systems a contract worth as much as $600 million. The rugged AMPV ground vehicle is built in five variations (see the figure) to cover a broad range of missions. BAE Systems is currently in low-rate production of the AMPV and has delivered at least one of each of the variants. The contract provides for new capabilities and technologies to be added to the AMPV over its five-year lifetime and during the operating lifetimes of the vehicles. The highly survivable and mobile AMPVs were designed to replace the M113 vehicles of the Vietnam War era, with much improved power and mobility.
Bill Sheehy, the AMPV program director at BAE Systems said: “The AMPV family of vehicles will bring unmatched capability to the battlefield and has demonstrated outstanding survivability and force protection as well as flexibility and growth for the future.” Sheehy added: “This contract award will not only support production, but it will also allow for future upgrades through the development and integration of new capability sets onto existing variants.” The contract established BAE Systems as the sole-source provider for sustainment system and technical support as well as post-production sustainment and support for the AMPV program.
