MuRata Electronics N.A. recently announced its MAGICSTRAP miniature radio-frequency-identification (RFID) strap for direct mounting on printed-circuit boards (PCBs). The miniature strap, which measures only 3.2 x 1.6 x 0.7 mm, supports operation from 860 to 960 MHz. It is compatible with the global RFID standard, EPC-Global Gen.2, and offers memory capacity of 96 to 512 b. It is readable from multiple angles and uses the PCB's ground plane as an antenna to minimize PCB usage. The tiny RFID strap, which is based on the firm's advanced low-temperature-cofired-ceramic (LTCC) material technology, can be handled routinely like any other surface-mount-technology (SMT) component.
