With a new time-domain solver and high-frequency tool for modeling and simulating three-dimensional (3D) RF and microwave applications, engineers should be able to tackle many applications and antennas with speed, required memory, and accuracy. The software, called CHRONOS, is well suited for the analysis and design of RF and antenna applications including the following: near- and far-field applications; planar microwave and antenna structures; wire antennas; ultrawideband (UWB) antennas; and microwave circuits, waveguides, and coaxial structures. With an easy-to-use interface, it allows design engineers to model the geometry and assign its physical properties. Results are provided in both the time and frequency domains. Using automatic post-processing tools, time-domain results can be transformed and displayed with different parameters in the frequency domain. Time savings are derived from the move from frequency-domain techniques to the use of finite-difference-time-domain (FDTD) analysis methods, as well as parallelization of the program.

After the geometry is specified and its material properties and required outputs are assigned, CHRONOS will automatically generate an efficient mesh for accurate simulation. The software includes a smart mesh generator combined with material identification code. This code can recognize all of the details of any structure and decide how to distribute the mesh sizes based on the accuracy requirements of the time-domain solver. The mesh distribution can be generated either manually or automatically. To perform mesh generation, a finer grid is placed in the areas that have fine features. Cell sizes are then increased and decreased gradually between the different regions while maintaining accuracy requirements for the time-domain solver. CHRONOS is compatible with all major computer-aided-design (CAD) programs, such as Autodesk, Solid-Edge, and Solidworks.
