It should come as no surprise that the latest research report from market research firm ABI Research shows a large expected increase in the amount of data moving to and from mobile devices compared to data to and from fixed installations. With the increasing use of cellular telephones as multiple-function, "Smart" phones, and the growth of portable devices such as the Blackberry to send and receive data, audio, and video files, the very concept of the "home office" has changed from a computer and a desk to a portable device and a base station.
The cellular telephone, of course, started the change in thinking, by making it possible to call an individual rather than an officethe office simply moves with the individual now. It is not difficult to imagine a future in which very little data moves to and from any fixed locations, other than "mass e-mailings" and other data services sent from large servers. Whether the mobility is a good thing, only time will tell.
