Army Awards General Dynamics $1.2 Billion for IM-SHORAD Vehicles

The U. S. Army Contracting Command at Redstone Arsenal taps General Dynamics Land Systems for its IM-SHORAD systems to counter UAV threats.

General Dynamics Land Systems (Sterling Heights, MI) has been awarded a $1.2 billion contract by the U. S. Army to produce, test, and deliver its Interim Maneuver Short-Range Air Defense (IM-SHORAD) systems. The U. S. Army Contracting Command, (Redstone Arsenal, AL) is the contracting agency of the hybrid (cost-no-fee, cost-plus-fixed-fee, firm-fixed-price and fixed-price-incentive) contract (number W31P4Q-20-D-0039). Work locations and funding will be determined with each order, with the initial order worth $230 million and covering 28 Stryker 8 × 8 wheeled armored vehicles outfit with IM-SHORAD capability for $230 million (see figure). The full contract has an estimated completion date of Sept. 30, 2025.

The IM-SHORAD system counters threats from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and other rotary- and fixed-wing aircraft, with the Stryker providing a stable operating platform. General Dynamics Land Systems will team with Leonardo DRS and Raytheon Technologies on the production and delivery of the IM-SHORAD-equipped Stryker vehicles, with work locations and funding determined with each order. General Dynamics Land Systems has production locations in Tallahassee, FL; Scranton, PA; London, Ontario; Lima, OH; and Anniston, AL.

According to Don Kotchman, vice-president and general manager of General Dynamics Land Systems: “General Dynamics and our teammates Leonardo DRS and Raytheon are pleased to be able to partner with the Army to bring this powerful capability to U.S. Soldiers.” He added: “This dedicated SHORAD capability adds a new operational dimension to the Stryker fleet in all of the Army’s maneuver formations.”
