The new model ADF7023-J RF transceiver from Analog Devices addresses the ARIB STD-T96 protocol for wireless data transmission. The ARIB STD-T96 standard was created by the Japanese Association of Radio Industries and Businesses (ARIB) for the automatic transmission and measurement of data from remote sources using low-power radio signals. It has been endorsed for smart-grid applications, including in Home Energy Management Systems (HEMS) applications. (For more on smart-grid applications, don't miss the special news report in the March 2011 issue of Microwaves & RF.)

The ADF7023-J operates from 902 to 958 MHz at data rates to 300 kb/s using two-state frequency-shift keying (FSK)/Gaussian-FSK (GFSK) modulation. It runs on supply voltages of 1.8 to 3.6 V and draws only 12.8 mA current in receive mode. The transceiver chip includes an 8-b processor and enhanced baseband processing capabilities. It is priced at $2.62 each in 1000-piece quantities.
