Fast-Boot SBC Secures Mission-Critical Avionics Systems

Sept. 12, 2017
A modular safety certifiable SBC has been designed with extremely fast boot time for mission-critical avionics applications.

With a blazing boot time of less than 1 s, the MFCC-8558 BuiltSAFE single board computer (SBC) module from Mercury Systems provides the performance and durability needed for mission-critical avionics applications. The boot time includes the real-time operating system (RTOS) and the graphics driver, yielding a speed increase 30 times faster than the previous generation SBC module. The conduction-cooled SBC can be delivered with all documentation, certification evidence, and supporting artifacts required to prove compliance for avionics certification to DO-178C/DO-254.

The switched mezzanine card (XMC) SBC is designed for safety as well as for performance. “Mercury is committed to making significant advances to the state of avionics,” noted Greg Tiedemann, director of product management for Mercury Mission Systems. “By dramatically reducing boot time of safety critical flight systems, we enable our customers to meet stricter operations requirements.”

The SBC is designed for seamless integration with other modules that have XMC 2.0 mezzanine sites. The modular format simplifies the design of subsystems, allowing functions such as input/output (I/O) processing and video and graphics signal processing to be added in the form of similar compatible modules. The SBC is based on the NXP QorIQ T2080 quad-core central processing unit (CPU) and can be supplied as air- or conduction-cooled versions.
