Development System Explores 60-GHz Spectrum

May 25, 2016
A development kit includes a WR-15 waveguide transmitter and receiver for forming short-range links at 60 GHz.

Millimeter-wave frequencies offer wide bandwidths in support of high data rates, admittedly for short-range applications. For those seeking to explore the use of unlicensed frequency spectrum around 60 GHz, Pasternack comes to the 2016 IMS with its PEM009-KIT 60-GHz development system to help evaluate single- and multiple-carrier schemes with high-bandwidth modulation from 57 to 64 GHz.

The kit includes the model PEM001-MIM transmit and model PEM002-MIM receive WR-15 waveguide modules based on silicon-germanium (SiGe) BiCMOS semiconductor technology. The modules are controlled by integrated receive and transmit printed-circuit-board (PCB) assemblies that incorporate signal-processing functions, power-supply regulation, and crystal reference oscillators with low phase noise for enhanced receiver sensitivity.

The transmit and receive PCBs can also be phase locked to an external reference source. Control of the kit system is by means of a USB connection to a host computer with graphical-user-interface (GUI) software. The kit supports a wide range of modulation schemes, including frequency-shift keying (FSK), minimum-shift keying (MSK), and vector modulation and can be driven by a user-designed baseband system or a vector modulated programmable arbitrary waveform generator. The link range of the system can be increased by adding WR-15 gain horn antennas.
