Surface-Mount Caps Command High Power

June 3, 2014
Ceramic chip capacitors have been developed for use in high-power applications and with voltages to 3600 V.

High-power circuit designs are getting smaller, and high-power surface-mount multilayer ceramic chip capacitors (MLCCs) such as the QUAD HIFREQ 2525 series from Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. are helping to make that happen. Ideal for commercial and military high-frequency applications such as RF/microwave signal generators and in magnetic-resonance-imaging (MRI) coils, these capacitors are available with values from 1 to 2700 pF and tolerances as tight as ±0.1 pF, and quality factors (Qs) of greater than 4000 at 10 MHz for a 1-pF capacitor. Rated for voltages from 300 to 3600 V, these rugged little capacitors feature equivalent series resistance (ESR) as low as 0.018 Ω. Visitors to IMS Booth No. 1446 can see a variety of different MLCC devices on display.
