WiMAX Testing Looks Good To Go

The broadband wireless market known as WiMAX has shown signs to have
the potential for growth that the wireless industry's largest market,
cellular telephones, displayed years earlier. According to a report by
Maravedis (www.maravedis-bwa.com), "WiMAX and Broadband Wireless
(Sub-11 GHz) Worldwide Market Analysis and Trends 2006-2012," the
WiMAX-certified equipment market is expected to reach $140 million USD
in 2006, or about 17 percent of the broadband wireless access (BWA)
market. The BWA market grew from $562 million USD in 2004 to $637
million USD in 2005.

The 800-page study shows great promise for WiMAX, and thus for WiMAX
test solutions. The WiMAX equipment market is projected to reach $6
billion USD per year by 2012, having accumulated revenues to $15
billion USD by that point.

WJ Communications Partners With Hitachi

WJ Communications has signed an original-equipment-manufacturer (OEM)
agreement with Hitachi America to supply fixed
radio-frequency-identification (RFID) readers for use with Hitachi's
2.45-GHz RFID microchip. Hitachi will market the reader as part of its
overall RFID solutions. The Hitachi microchip (u-chip) was designed as
an authentification inclusion for high-value items susceptible to
fraud. According to Chuck Wilson, Senior Director for Hitachi
America's Security Solutions Group, "We evaluated several RFID reader
makers and WJ Communications provided the appropriate answer for
Hitachi America to augment the capabilities of Hitachi's u-chip RFID
offerings."

3M Joins RFID Consortium

The Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Consortium announced that 3M
has joined its group of companies to form a patent licensing
organization. The companies are dedicated to promoting rapid adoption
of RFID technology by facilitating easier access to essential patents
and by providing patent owners the opportunity to receive fair
compensation for their patents. According to Kevin Ashton, RFID
Consortium spokesperson and Vice-President of Marketing for
ThingMagic, "The addition of 3M in the formation of the RFID
Consortium is yet another indicator that we are making substantive
progress in our joint effort to create a patent licensing arrangement
that benefits the RFID industry, its customers, and essential patent
holders."

TriQuint Launches K-Band Amps At EuMW

TriQuint Semiconductor will be announcing a pair of new
wide-dynamic-range GaAs amplifiers at the European Microwave Week
(EuMW) in Manchester, England last week. The firm's linear amplifier
models TGA4530 (chip) and TGA4530-SM (packaged version) are designed
for point-to-point radios and K-band satellite communications (satcom)
systems operating from 17 to 21 GHz. Over that range, the GaAs MMIC
amplifiers provide +30 dBm output power at 1-dB compression with an
output third-order intercept point of +42 dBm. The gain is 20 dB at +7
VDC and 825 mA. Data sheets for the two products are available at the
links below:

Vector Fields Introduces ConcertoES at EuMW

Electromagnetic (EM) simulation software supplier Vector Fields Ltd.
introduced the ConcertoES(TM) version of its advanced Concerto(TM) EM
simulation software last week at the European Microwave Week (EuMW) in
Manchester, England. The new version offers three-dimensional (3D)
finite-difference-time-domain (FDTD) analysis at a fraction of the
cost of the full version, but with no compromise in performance or
accuracy. Although lacking some of the capabilities of the full
version, ConcertoES uses the same modeler and model formats as the
full version and can be upgraded to the full capabilities at any time.

Skyworks Unveils ISM-Band Active Mixers

Designed for infrastructure Industrial-Medical-Scientific (ISM)
applications, the model SKY42068 active mixer operates from 400 to
1000 MHz for CDMA, EDGE, GSM, TETRA, WCDMA, WiMAX, and WLL
applications while the model SKY42070 active mixer, with RF range of
1700 to 2200 MHz, is suitable for DCS, PCS, and UMTS communications.
These wide-dynamic-range mixers include mixer circuitry,
local-oscillator (LO) amplifiers, and dual LO inputs selected by an
external switch interface. The SKY42068 provides an input third-order
intercept (IIP3) of +36 dBm and a noise figure of 9.5 dB, and the
SKY42070 features an IIP3 of +33 dBm with a noise figure of 9.0 dB.
Both products are offered as lead (Pb) free, RoHS-compliant packages.
