Padovani Receives 2009 IEEE Sumner Award ROBERTO PADOVANI, who developed and commercialized third-generation (3G) cellular communications networks incorporating code division multiple access (CDMA) technology, is being honored with the 2009 IEEE Eric. E. Sumner Award sponsored by Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs. Since the mid-1990s, Padovani has been chiefly responsible for defining and pursuing the evolution of CDMA technology into the 3G standards known as CDMA2000 1x and CDMA2000 Evolution-Data Optimized (EVDO).
