With a new engineering committee in place, the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) plans to develop protocol and signaling standards for smart utility networks. the tia tr-51 committee on Smart Utility networks will bring together utility companies and the information and communications technology (ICT) community. it will focus on efficient access technology with a mesh-network topography.

The Smart Utility Networks standards are intended to help utilities improve services to their customers. During the TR-51 standard creation process, tia will work to incorporate applicable existing wireless standards in order to develop an integrated multi-layer standard.

Mike Lynch of MJ Lynch & Associates LLC has accepted the position of facilitator for the tia tr-51 committee on Smart Utility Networks (see photo). Lynch has coordinated international teams to make spectrum available for new services. He also has domestic and international expertise in establishing and managing corporate spectrum-management policies. to learn more, visit tr51.tiaonline.org.
