Generating microwave signals often requires some form of frequency synthesis, and most designers are familiar with phase-locked loops (PLLs). But the engineers at Stanford Research Systems have developed a new approach called rational approximation frequency synthesis, which can not only deliver fine resolution, but keep the phase noise extremely low at the same time. The technique was detailed in the April issue of Defense Electronics, a supplement to Microwaves & RF, Electronic Design, and Power Electronics Technology magazines. The synthesis approach is ideal for generating the broadband signals needed in commercial communications systems as well as in electronic-warfare (EW) platforms.
